众所周知,名人是各种潮流的灵感来源,但有时候他们也会不小心“造”个新词出来。下面这些你用得很顺手的新词,都是拜名人所赐。

泰拉·班克斯(Tyra Banks):smize

Over the course of the 20 plus seasons of her show "Americas Next Top Model," Tyra Banks invented a handful of words ranging from "flawsome" (embracing and loving your flaws) to "drekitude" (wack, disgusting, wrong).

泰拉·班克斯在20多季的《全美超级模特儿新秀大赛》节目中发明了很多词,从flawsome(接受并爱上你的缺陷)到drekitude(古怪、恶心、错误的)。

But the most ubiquitous Tyra-ism is "smize," meaning "to smile with your eyes."

但是人们用得最多的是smize,意思是“用眼睛微笑”。

In fact, the word (and phenomenon) became so popular that Banks released an app to help smartphone users master the art of smizing.

事实上,这个词(和现象)太受欢迎了,班克斯甚至为此发布了一款智能手机应用,帮助用户学会用眼睛微笑。

碧昂斯(Beyoncé):bootylicious

Although the term actually predates the Destinys Child song, Queen Bey is credited with popularizing "bootylicious."

虽然这个词在“真命天女”组合发布同名单曲之前就已经存在了,但是这个词能够流传开来,碧昂斯功不可没。

Meaning "sexually attractive," this compound word is so widespread that it made it into the Oxford English Dictionary.

这个合成词的意思是“具有性吸引力”,因为应用很广泛还被收录进了《牛津英语辞典》。

泰勒·斯威夫特(Taylor Swift):Swiftmas

Taylor Swift coined this portmanteau of "Swift" and "Christmas" in 2014. Now an annual tradition, the term refers to the lavish gifts she mails her fans around the holiday season.

泰勒·斯威夫特于2014年创造了这个Swift和Christmas的合成词。如今已成为年度传统,指的是泰勒在圣诞节前后给粉丝寄出的丰厚礼物。

In an effort to take her personal brand to the next level, the singer applied to trademark "Swiftmas" (as well as phrases related to her albums) in 2015.

为了让个人品牌发扬光大,泰勒还在2015年给Swiftmas(以及和她专辑有关的短语)申请了商标注册。

《泽西海岸》:GTL

This acronym, which stands for "gym, tan, laundry," comes from MTVs "Jersey Shore." Although it was popularized by cast member Pauly D, it turns out that the phrase was actually invented by series producer SallyAnn Salsano.

这个缩略语代表的意思是“健身房、美黑、洗衣服”,来自MTV电视台的《泽西海岸》。尽管这个词是因为剧中演员保罗·D而流行开来的,但事实上这个词是由该剧的制片人萨利安·萨尔萨诺创造的。

"We started summarizing the days shoots on whiteboards and just started writing GTL for short, and Pauly was in front of the camera like, GTL? Whats that? Salsano said in an interview with Complex.

萨尔萨诺在《Complex》杂志的一次采访中说:“我们开始在白板上给当天的拍摄做总结,我刚刚写下GTL这个缩写,保罗就在镜头前说‘GTL?这是什么?’”

《拉古纳海滩》:dunzo

Meaning "done" or "finished," "dunzo" originated on another MTV series, "Laguna Beach."

新词dunzo表示“做完了”,源于MTV电视台的另一部剧《拉古纳海滩》。

It became so popular that it even entered the notably colorful lexicon of Tom Haverford on "Parks and Rec."

这个词太流行了,以至于《公园与游憩》中以词汇丰富著称的汤姆·哈弗福德也用了这个词。

短视频社交网红凯拉·纽曼(Kayla Newman):fleek

"Fleek" comes from the phrase "on fleek," which was coined in 2014 by viral Vine star Kayla Newman (better known by her username, Peaches Monroee).

Fleek源于短语on fleek,是短视频社交应用Vine上的网红明星凯拉·纽曼在2014年创造的(纽曼的网名Peaches Monroee更为人所熟知)。

Its typically used to refer to well-groomed eyebrows, but can be applied to anything from hair to makeup.

Fleek通常用来指修剪得很完美的眉毛,但也可用来指打理得很好的发型或妆容。

杰·鲁(Ja Rule):clapback

We hear a lot about celebrity clapbacks these days. Merriam-Webster defines "clapback" as "responding to a criticism with a withering comeback."

我们最近经常听说名人的clapback。韦氏词典对clapback的定义是“用极具讽刺性的回答来应对批评声”接近于汉语里的“回呛”。

Although its commonly used as a noun, it stems from the verb "clap back," the name of rapper Ja Rules 2003 diss track.

Clapback通常用作名词,不过该词源于动词短语clap back,是说唱歌手杰·鲁2003年的一首攻击性单曲的名字。

德雷克(Drake):YOLO

一些英语名人小常识(这些新词因名人而生)(8)

We can thank Drake for the widespread usage of "YOLO," but the Canadian rapper wasnt the only celeb to tap into that particular zeitgeist.

我们应该感谢加拿大说唱歌手德雷克,是他让YOLO(You only live once)开始普遍使用。不过德雷克不是唯一一个关注YOLO精神的名人。

Legendary 20th-century actress Mae West is known for the quote, "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough."

20世纪传奇女演员梅·韦斯特说过一句很著名的话:“你只能活一次,但如果你活得好,一次也就够了。”

史蒂芬·科拜尔(Stephen Colbert):truthiness

一些英语名人小常识(这些新词因名人而生)(9)

Long before the rise of "post-truth" politics and alternative facts, late-night host Stephen Colbert came up with the clever word "truthiness."

早在后真相政治和另类事实出现之前,深夜节目主播史蒂芬·科拜尔就发明了truthiness这个聪明的词。

"Were not talking about the truth; were talking about something that seems like truth — the truth we want to exist," he said, referring to George W. Bush.

他曾说过:“我们谈论的不是真相;我们谈论的是看起来像真相的东西——我们希望存在的真相。”他当时指的是美国前总统小布什。

佩雷斯·希尔顿(Perez Hilton):amazeballs

一些英语名人小常识(这些新词因名人而生)(10)

Theres no denying the pervasiveness of the word "amazeballs." Coined by Perez Hilton, it refers to something thats "extremely good, impressive, or enjoyable."

无可否认,amazeballs这个词无处不在。这个词是佩雷斯·希尔顿创造的,意思是“极好的、让人印象非常深刻或愉悦”的东西。
